How does the Xtracycle ride, compared to my regular bike?

Riding offroad with the Xtracycle and the Down Low Glow

Most people love the way the Xtraycle rides. It's less harsh, just as nimble in city riding, and great offroad. The long wheelbase is extremely stable. You simply can't tip forward or backwards on this bike.

How hard is it to install an Xtracycle FreeRadical on my mountain bike?

Installing an Xtracycle FreeRadical on a mountain bike is a 2-4 hour procedure. A professional bike mechanic may be able to do it in as little as 45 minutes to an hour. But for an occasional mechanic, in a normal garage setting, you should budget the majority of a Saturday afternoon.

If you're located in the Bay Area, check out our installation and self-install services.

Does my Xtracycle fit on public transportation

Yes, many public transport bike accomodations options are flexible enough to handle a Sport Utility Bicycle. Keep in mind that the Xtracycle is the same width as a 'regular' bike and only 15" longer. Some public transport services have length limits that you will no doubt learn about the hard way. But in our experience, on Bay Area services such as BART, Bay Bridge Bike Shuttle, Capitol Corridor Amtrak, and many buses, the answer is yes.

Is my bike compatible with the Xtracycle FreeRadical?

We'll be updating this checklist, but here's a starting point.

  1. Rigid or front suspension bicycle. Full-suspension mountain bikes are most often not compatible.
  2. Rear brakes on your bicycle are either V-brakes or disc brakes. (Disc, the rotor size should be 203mm. If your rotor is 160mm, you buy a replacement rotor.
